Exploring Charlotte County
Beaches and Hikes

Many of our guests who visit Saint Andrews use Seaside Beach Resort as a hub.   They spend a few days enjoying the Saint Andrews attractions (e.g., Aquarium, whale watching, Kingsbrae Garden, Ministers Island) - but guests often stay on a few extra days to explore the broader Charlotte County area.   There is so much natural beauty to experience!

Here is a list of some of our favourite local places to explore:

Beaches
  • The closest beach is directly in front of Seaside Beach Resort.   The best time to wade is at high tide, when the ocean water has had a chance to warm up a little bit from the sand - but the water is refreshingly cold.   We recommend wearing water shoes, to protect your feet from shells and rocks.
  • Katy's Cove is salt-water sand beach in Saint Andrews, a five-minute drive away from Seaside.   There is parking, a public washroom/change room and no fee to access.  The water in the cove is warmer, and we think it is best enjoyed at high tide.
  • Canal Beach is a fresh-water sand beach on Lake Utopia in St. George, around a 30 minute drive from Seaside. This is my favourite swimming spot, a bit of a hidden treasure that locals enjoy.   There are washrooms on site and a canteen in the summer.   Canal beach is also a great place to launch a kayak.
  • New River Beach is a salt-water sand beach in the provincial park,  around a 40 minute drive from Seaside.  The water is often a bit wavy, so can be a fun place to body-surf the waves.  We recommend wearing water shoes, to protect your feet from shells and rocks.

Hikes
  • Pagan Point Nature Reserve trail is just down the road from Seaside, off the Van Horne Trail.  It's a short walk through the forest, which opens up to a rocky beach area.  This is a great option for a short family walk or dog walk.
  • Sam Orr's Pond Nature Trail provides a beautiful forested walk around Sam Orrs Pond, part of the Caughey-Taylor Nature Preserve.
  • Chamcook Mountain Trail  provide stunning vistas of the Passamaquoddy Bay.   The hike starts just behind the Rossmount Hotel (~10 minute drive), and you climb up the old switch-back carriage road to the mountain top.  It is a 20-25 minutes hike to the summit - on a clear day, if you squint, you can almost see Seaside Beach Resort.
  • Chitticks Beach Trail is a ocean-side trail at the New River Beach Provincial Park, which connects with the longer Barnaby Head trail.  The trails have dramatic look-outs and interesting routes along the cliffs, with access to a series of beaches along the way.   It's around a 40 minute drive to the park, but well worth the dramatic scenery.

By accessing these trails and swimming areas, you acknowledge and accept that you do so at your own risk, and that the property is not responsible for any injury, loss, or damage.
